Thinking of setting up a wine cellar? Howards Storage World has storage solutions for your favourite drops.

1) Plan your cellar

Look for a wine rack system which can be customised to suit any space, from the kitchen cupboard to under the stairs. A natural or stained finish in heavy duty timber is recommended for durability. Make sure the racks can securely stack atop one another. If you're keeping bottles in the kitchen or on a shelf, a small wine rack will do.

2) Sort your wine

Assess the type of wine and calculate the quantity of each to help plan wine storage needs. Wine should be stored horizontally to ensure that the cork stays wet and airtight, but sparkling wines can be stored upright because of the carbon dioxide present in the bottle. Measure the maximum space available, taking into account height, width and depth measurements.

3) Store your wine

The favoured conditions for storing wine are darkness and constant temperatures of around 10 to 12degrees. For those who live in apartments or with limited space, the garage can be an ideal solution. Put the most frequently used wine on the top levels of the rack and the least used on the lower levels so that they can age undisturbed. Once a bottle of wine is laid down, it should be left until it is to be opened.
