Let’s face it. A vast amount of wine out there today is “ready-to-drink”. With the increasing popularity of wine and the current wine glut, the market is loaded with discount wine stores, budget priced labels and clean skins. The wines are manufactured for immediate consumption and will not improve significantly with time. A popular statistic says that 98% of all wine purchased is consumed within the first 24 hours. If only kept for short periods, specialist storage is not an issue for the average wine (or any wine for that matter!).
What is good wine? Chardonnay, Sauvingon Blanc, Pinot noir? When it comes to knowing a bottle of good wine, the jargon can get in the way of really understanding what it's all about. It’s easy to be put off by the complexity of wine drinking and the whole language and knowledge surrounding it. Is wine drinking only reserved for a small, elitist caste? The short answer is definitively "no"; everybody can and should enjoy wine.
Developing a passion for wine inevitably results in the collection and consumption of larger quantities of higher quality wine. This coincides with the desire for a cellar of wine to be at your disposal. The idea of having a wine cellar may seem impracticable, but be assured that a wine cellar need not be expensive or difficult to setup. Anyone, whether living in a house, a flat or modern townhouse can, with a little ingenuity, ‘cellar’ wine. By understanding and considering the essential characteristics of the ‘ideal’ cellar it will become clear that these may be applied to any nook or cranny within the home. But why sacrifice the space and time in setting up a cellar in your home when you could store with us without the hassle!
First, let’s look at the basics. Most wines have a “best before” date that can be measured in terms of years (or months), but this can be lessened considerably when stored in conditions causing undue stress. Unlike a bottle of whiskey, there is insufficient alcohol in wine to prevent it from going bad over time. Even quality wines, which theoretically should improve with age, may degrade or over develop in less time than predicted even in as short as a year if not stored properly.
No matter what the quality of wine there are some basic rules one can follow to store wine.
Even “ready-to-drink” wines can be safely stored for up to 6-12 months with minimal loss of quality as long as it is stored in the following minimum conditions:
-
away from direct sunlight,
-
temperatures between of 4ºC and 18ºC (40ºF and 65ºF),
-
temperature does not fluctuate more than 2-3ºC (5ºF) once annually, and
-
humidity levels are greater than 50%.
Storing your wine outside of these limits whether on a rack in the dining room (or in the fridge!) will cause it to pass its prime or spoil in shorter period of time than suggested by the winemaker. While the first two conditions are relatively easy to produce, most people will find it very difficult to supply the last two without some type of cellar or climate controlled wine cabinet.
So invite everyone around to your place and drink up now, or better yet call us today to store your collection with us!
